a few for Friday: B, G, and B&B

So what do we make of the Bethenny Frankel money mystery?  Her desperate visit on The Today Show did little to clarify doubts surrounding the sale of Skinnygirl Cocktails.  She implied the 100+ million dollar figure was accurate.  Doubters at Huffpo ran a retraction.  Her defensive and side-stepping response has everybody wondering about the truth.  Fishy.Today also broke the Giuliana Rancic cancer diagnosis story this week.  I have a soft spot for Giuliana and frown over her sad turn of luck.  Word is the cancer was present in both breasts, and she had a double lumpectomy within the last couple days.  The medical community rushed to defend IVF and insist that the treatments did not necessarily increase the risk of cancer.  Some cancers are hormone-fed, correct?  IVF involves super doses of hormones, correct?  Doctors are making a shitload of money off fertility treatments, including IVF, correct?  Correct.  In more uplifting news, I’m living for Beavis and Butt-head right now and anxiously await the premiere next Thursday.  This is one remake that won’t suck.  No one will miss Jersey Snore.  This season was extra weak marinara sauce.  Seriously though, the question we’ve all been skirting: is it possible Pauly D is gay?  Carefully consider it.

A New Treatment Modality

You guys watching Web Therapy on ShowtimeKudrow plays Fiona Wallice, the innovator of a new “treatment modality” made of three minute web therapy sessions.  Already a buzzy internet hit, the online experiment transitioned to the premium channel this year. Lisa Kudrow has a knack for affectations, and in many ways this show left off where the hilariously self-aware The Comeback left off. Lily Tomlin drops in as Wallice’s insecurity-inducing pot puffing mom.  Jennifer Elise Cox delivers deadpan ditzy vacant like no other blonde on the scene.Give Web Therapy a chance; it isn’t perfect, but it is smart and relevant.

Tuesday’s Tarot

The Six of Pentacles illustrates the stratus between the rich, poor, and everything in between.  Life has a funny way of divvying up resources.  One day you’re down; the next day up.  The Six of Pentacles represents the exchange of giving and receiving.  The fortunate have a responsibility to share, and those in need must accept help with humble gratitude.  Remember – the big-hearted give generously. While Pentacles automatically get associated with money, no need to rush to conclusions with this card.  The give and take can take numerous forms: advice, sponsorship, domination and submission.

Luna Protein Bars

Try these Luna Protein Bars yet?  Introduced in 2010, I prefer these to the original Luna BarsLuna Protein Bars have a rounder shape and are covered in chocolatey goodness.  The texture and mouth feel are addictive.  These could become a habit-forming problem.  In addition to a respectable amount of calcium, folate, and other minerals, gain a whopping 7 grams of protein and save 70 calories and 2 grams of fat over a similarly sized Snickers bar.

A mid-week mid-90′s revival with Portishead

This week I had the pleasure of visiting two of my very favorite people in one of the world’s most enjoyable cities for the Portishead show.  No, we did not stumble into a portal which transported us back to 1994.  Before we arrived, one of the crew asked what the crowd would be like.  “Old,” I replied.  Lest we forget that 1994 was 17 unforgiving years ago.Truthfully, I haven’t listened to much of Third, Portishead’s most recent record from oh-eight.  During a certain moment in time, however, I wore Dummy out.  In the mid-nineties, ubiquitous Dummy was in everyone’s collection, at least in my drugged-up slutty circles.  Is there anything druggier or sluttier than PortisheadSour Times for Good Times.Turns out, Portishead live is a deeply conflicting experience.  Apart from some short-lived glitchy sound issues, the selections from Dummy were sublime.  In particular, Wandering Star was a well-executed highlight. With regret I must confess I did not connect to their newer more “experimental” offerings.  At their worst, Portishead sounded like the off-key bastard child of Sonic Youth and Evanescence.  It was two songs worth of misery interrupted by an old familiar fave followed by more loud pain.  The contrast was jarring.  The crowd was especially limp and unresponsive to the less familiar material as is usually the case, but in this instance magnified.  One review described the audience as “rapt,” which really wasn’t an accurate reading of my area of the room.  Curious about the set list?  Silence, Hunter, Mysterons, The Rip, Sour Times, Magic Doors, Wandering Star, Machine Gun, Over, Glory Box, Chase the Tear, Cowboys, Threads, with an encore: Roads, We Carry On.During Glory Box my friend leaned forward and yelled in my ear, “Oh yeah, this is that song from The Craft.  I totally feel like I’m being sexually assaulted in the woods by Skeet Ulrich.”  And that pretty much sums up the experience.
