BELLY

NAS DMX BELLYEvery once in a while, I have to dip myself in 90’s nostalgia and tonight was a full Belly night.  I have probably seen Belly 20 times and I never get tired of it.  I wouldn’t describe the acting as quality.  I mean Nas and DMX aren’t really Oscar contenders.  This directorial debut by Hype Williams definitely feels like a 90 minute music video, but really what is so bad about that?

BELLY BWIn case you need convincing, here are three good reasons to watch Belly.DROP A DIME1) T-Boz is in it.T BOZ BELLYTommy’s not gonna be shit but what he is

Monday’s Music: Fiona Forever

Do you actually like the new Fiona Apple album, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever DoI’m working on it a track at a time, and at times, it does feel like work.  I try because there are three things I will always love about Fiona Apple.  First, she’s uncompromising in her artistic expression without regard to the perceived negative consequences.  Second, she tirelessly curates her vegan-waif-coffeehouse-boho look.  Third, her voice hits a tender Angela Chase chord in my nostalgic 90’s heart. Long-winded and pretentious album titles notwithstanding, I say Fiona Forever.

Little Women

Can’t get too nostalgic about Miracle on 34th Street?  What about Little Women circa ’94?  Let’s spark a yule log and enjoy Winona and the girls in all their unmitigated, mid-nineties glory.  Susan Sarandon presides over the sisters March played by Trini Alvarado, Claire Danes, Samantha Mathis, and a young Kirsten DunstLouisa May Alcott purists may quibble with certain literary inaccuracies, but isn’t that always true with adaptations of classics? Honestly, half of the enjoyment of this movie is luxuriating in the hypnotic 1860’s hair weave action.  The mega-manes serve as the attention-seeking fifth sister.  Consider a visit to Orchard House once you’ve taken your annual trip to Indiana for A Christmas Story.
